The Fortress
Located in the town of Koggala upon Sri Lanka’s pristine southern coastline, 12km from the historic city of Galle, the Fortress Resort and Spa is a luxury boutique beachfront property. Styled after the Dutch fort at Galle, the design echoes Sri Lanka’s Dutch and Portuguese influences, creating a visually stunning and unusual hotel layout. Guests at this resort experience high end service and luxury to match the faultless sea views, and it is therefore the perfect choice for a few nights of total comfort and relaxation.
Facilities
All rooms include super king sized beds, open plan en-suite bathrooms and either private courtyards or balconies boasting beautiful ocean or garden views. There are LCD televisions and Bose sound systems in every room, as well as toiletries, robes, safety deposit boxes and minibars.
The resort has a pool and billiards table, as well as a 24 hour fitness center, library and spa. Dining options are available in the two main restaurants , serving either international or traditional Sri Lankan dishes, and location dining is also possible in the resort’s wine cellar.
Local Wildlife
The resort’s turtle hatchery gives guests the opportunity to see five endangered species including the Loggerhead, Hawksbill and Leatherback turtles. Whilst the resort itself has limited wildlife presence, tours to local national parks (Yala or Uda Walawe) can be arranged, as well as river safaris or rainforest tours.
Optional Activities
Daily excursions to a number of nearby wildlife national parks are available for guests who wish to experience a safari drive. However, guests mostly visit this property for relaxation by the beach. It is also possible to walk directly into the small town of Koggala. The resort can organise excursions for those interested in whale watching, birding or water sports at nearby locations. Additionally, during the turtle season of October to April, five species of turtle can be found along the Koggala beaches. The hotel itself runs a turtle hatching program, giving the guests an extraordinary opportunity to observe these fascinating creatures. Cultural tours are popular, and can include visits to the Galle Fort, temples, museums and tea plantations.

We were absolutely thrilled by the whole experience and can only commend the helpfulness and friendliness of everyone who made our holiday so special. We cannot speak highly enough of all of our guides who were extremely knowledgeable and went above and beyond to enhance our Sri Lankan wildlife encounters. We felt very privileged to be with guides who have so much expertise.
