This itinerary has been carefully designed to appeal to cost-conscious families wishing to experience a good variety of Madagascar’s different habitats and wildlife, then spend time by the beach snorkelling, diving, whale watching, whale shark snorkelling or simply relaxing. We have chosen simple yet well-run friendly properties we know to be good. Your trip begins with the unique spiny forest at Berenty Special Reserve with its habituated ring tailed lemurs and dancing sifakas. Next come eastern rainforest reserves where you will meet the largest lemur (indri), colourful chameleons and other strange creatures. Finish your fabulously adventurous journey with the wonderfully small family owned and family run Sakatia Lodge for excellent snorkelling, whale watching and well-earned leisure time before the flight home directly from Nosy Be.

Today transfer to the airport to take a domestic flight to Fort Dauphin in the far south of Madagascar. On arrival make the bumpy (4 hour) but very interesting transfer through the eerie spiny forest to the Berenty Private Reserve.

Day 3 - Berenty Reserve

A full day to enjoy the wildlife of the Berenty Reserve. The gallery and spiny forests of this reserve are famed for their many habituated ring-tailed lemurs and photogenic “dancing” Verreaux’s sifakas.

This is one of the best locations in Madagascar to observe and photograph wild lemurs up close and is always very popular with children.

The reserve is also home to a large colony of Madagascar flying foxes, white-footed sportive lemurs and gray-brown mouse lemurs. In the evening take a night walk in the bizzare spiny forest for its nocturnal species such as the warty chameleon.

Staying at Berenty Lodge. Includes All Meals.

Day 4 - Berenty Reserve

Today enjoy another morning of exploration on the easy and flat forest trails. Besides the wonderful lemurs, endemic birds include the hook-billed and sickle-billed vangas, Madagascar paradise flycatcher, white-browed owl and two species of vasa parrot.

After lunch and perhaps a visit to the Musuem and tortoise breeding centre make the 4 hour drive back to Fort Dauphin for the night, stopping to admire the spiny forest along the way.

Today transfer (4 hours) to Andasibe and the Analamazaotra (Andasibe-Mantadia) National Park, also known as Perinet.

This community-run zone offers an excellent opportunity to see the magnificent indri up close as well as giant earthworms, the huge Parson’s chameleon and much more. In the afternoon perhaps visit the Andasibe village to learn about the way of life in this rural part of the country.
