This short but action-packed tour delivers a phenomenal wildlife experience, as you have the chance of coming face to face (literally) with 14-metre grey whales.

Every winter, grey whales gather around San Ignacio Lagoon, halfway up the Baja California’s west coast, to give birth and then nurse their calves into the spring. What is unique is the way in which these whales interact with the small boats that head out in search of them. The whales come up to the boats on their own accord and spend time right next to the vessel, looking passengers in the eye and even welcoming human touch. This is sure to be an exhilarating and unforgettable wildlife encounter for absolutely anyone.

Throughout your time at the San Ignacio Lagoon Camp, it’s your choice how to spend your days. There will be 3 scheduled whale watching encounters each day, plus all the activities offered by the camp. These include kayaking or paddleboarding across the lagoon in the mangroves, going for a leisurely walk, mountain biking, or kicking back and having a siesta. You could opt for a 7am breakfast and then join the first whale watching encounter of the day when the park opens at 8 am. If you’d prefer, enjoy a lie in and a late breakfast and join the boat for the second scheduled whale excursion later in the morning. In the evening there is a happy hour at the bar, which you can enjoy whilst watching the sunset and making new friends around the fire pit. A game of billiards, followed by dinner and an evening presentation by one of the naturalists, create a pleasant environment in which to finish off your day in camp.

*The company that we use for these trips is a responsible tour boat operator. They never chase, crowd or harass the whales in any way, and the close interactions with the whales are only allowed to happen within a small area of the protected lagoon, meaning the whales know exactly where the boat interactions take place, if they wish for this.
