Infapro
INFAPRO is a tree nursery project just outside the main conservation area and is responsible for replanting areas of forest that were previously logged. Since its inception, it has planted more than 2 million trees, sequestering over 1.5 million tons of carbon dioxide. The project covers 25,454 hectares of secondary tropical rainforest. Located strategically near the gate of Danum Valley Field Centre, INFAPRO is a tree nursery project base that is responsible for replanting areas of forest that have been logged in the past.
The region hosts magnificent tropical rainforest dominated by dipterocarp trees, reaching up to 70 metres. This diverse habitat is home to orang-utans, pygmy elephants, gibbons and Malaysian sun bears The 25,000-hectare INFAPRO project area within the Ulu-Segama forestry unit faced extensive damage from 1980s selective logging. Since 1992, Face the Future and Sabah Foundation have been restoring the forest through enrichment planting, reintroducing threatened dipterocarp species and planting fruit trees to support wildlife. In 2013, the area gained Protected Forest Reserve status, prohibiting logging and connecting it to the pristine Danum Valley, creating a vast, safe habitat for flora and fauna.
Rooms at INFAPRO are comfortable and clean with ensuite bathrooms, hot water, air conditioning, and 24 hour electricity. Food is simple and tasty. The accommodation is just a half an hour drive to Danum Valley Field Centre (DVFC) and your daytime activities should be divided between the two centres with night drives being taken each evening at the INFAPRO centre. The night drives here have the potential to reveal some of Borneo’s rarest creatures such as leopard cat, marble cat, flat-headed cat, the Bornean clouded leopard, western tarsiers, slow loris, otter civet and binturong.

I would like to express my thanks to you for preparing the splendid itinerary, covering my recent trip to Borneo. I achieved every objective set, from reaching the summit of Mount Kinabalu to photographing wild orang-utans, proboscis monkeys and crocodiles, not to mention watching turtles laying their eggs and the hatchlings returning to the sea, plus all the other fascinating wildlife that was observed. The organisation on the ground was seamless and every connection and transfer in a somewhat complex itinerary went like clockwork. Accommodation and cuisine in the various lodges was excellent…superb diving at both Mabul and Sipadan. Once again, thank you – we shall be back.
