Pantanal and Central West
Pousada Aguape
Situated on a bank of the Aquidauana River in the southern Pantanal, Aguape ranch has been in the same family for over 150 years. Today it still continues with cattle ranching, but has diversified its activities to include eco-tourism and fishing.
The Pousada has 15 simple en suite rooms (housing a total of 45 guests) with air-conditioning and ceiling fans. Facilities include a lounge with TV, games room, restaurant, swimming pool and hammock area.
Excursions are offered around the property on horseback, on foot, in 4×4 safari vehicles as well as boats cruising on the river. There are also night safaris in 4×4 trucks offering good chances of seeing nocturnal mammals by spotlight.
For those interested in the Pantaneiro way of life, there is the opportunity to assist the ‘guachos’ with cattle drives and other traditional ranching activities.
Pousada Aguape is very child-friendly with comfortable hammocks, an outside dining area with regular traditional BBQs and a small library room with TV and internet access. There is also a games room, sand pit with volleyball court, souvenir shop and meeting room.

Yes, I am back from a wonderfully amazing realisation of a dream to see a jaguar. Too good to put into words. Everything went like clockwork – Sao Paulo airport is a bit of a maze. I landed up pretty well having a one to one trip with my guides. Cristalino was magical with American guides Will and Gill Carter, very much a ‘Birders’ paradise, but I loved it. Then I went on to the Jaguar Research Centre for what turned out to be 3 1/2 days of pure heaven. ‘Fisher’, my guide was brilliant and we managed to see Wilson, Hugo, Duda (on 3 occasions) and an unidentified cat. The young Duda was amazing, we followed her for a whole morning moving along the river bank and then in the evening actually saw her swimming across it. Wonderful memories.
