Garonga Safari Camp
Garonga Safari Camp is situated in the private 27,000-hectare Makalali Conservancy, just to the west of Kruger National Park and only one hour’s drive from Hoedspruit airport. The elevated camp overlooks a dry riverbed lined with ebony trees which acts as a natural pathway for game passing in front of the rooms. The main camp offers guests a relaxing open plan lounge and dining area complete with a homely open fireplace. The thatched roof and rough plastered walls conjure up a rustic feel, while the outdoor dining deck steps down to a natural rock-lined pool.
The six en-suite tented rooms are a charming blend of textures. Set on raised screed concrete platforms, they have earthy, plastered wall frames with canvas-tented roofs and you may either have windows open to nature or roll down the canvas sides for privacy. The rooms are light, airy and spacious with large, draped beds, outdoor showers, crisp linens and “Out of Africa” mosquito drapes. Each suite has a wooden deck with a hammock for relaxing and enjoying the spectacular views. The camp provides a complimentary laundry service, safety deposit boxes and access to telephones and medical services. WiFi is available in most areas of the camp.

This lodge is a firm favourite of our clients. Although Garonga Safari Camp is quite small and exclusive, with only six rooms, if you seek even more intimate and luxurious surroundings, try Little Garonga with only three suites.

We have just received the feedback form from you for our recent trip to South Africa which I will fill out shortly but I also wanted to thank you personally for organising us such a fantastic trip. The sheer variety of scenery and activities was amazing and the accommodation was uniformly excellent. We enjoyed good weather for our first few days in Cape Town allowing us get the best from Table Mountain as well as travel down to the Cape of Good Hope. A storm front did give a couple of wet days but this had little impact on our wine tasting in Franschhoek. In Hermanus we were fortunate to spot an early southern right whale as well as a humpback. We absolutely loved Montusi mountain lodge – what a view! We were also glad we visited the battlefields and the drive to Fugitive’s Drift lodge was quite enjoyable although I will never complain about potholes in the UK again. The suites at Tanda Tula were amazing and well beyond anything we have previously experienced on safari. The wildlife viewing for mammals was excellent with great sightings of lions and rhino in particular. Once again, many thanks and it’s now time for us to start our diet as we ate and drank rather too well.
