Kalahari Plains Camp

Scroll

Kalahari Plains Camp is situated in a remote part of the diverse and productive Central Kalahari Game Reserve (CKGR) and offers some of the best summer wildlife viewing opportunities in Africa. Located in central Botswana’s Kalahari Desert biome, CKGR is the largest conservation area in the entire country and, at five million hectares (12 million acres), one of the largest in the world.

Kalahari Plains Camp is perfectly situated on an immense pan just 20km from Deception Valley. The camp comprises 10 en-suite canvas units with a sleep-outs from which to enjoy the night skies. The main area consists of a lounge, dining area and central bar with a separate swimming pool and deck area. The tents and main area are all raised off the ground to catch the breeze and take in the sweeping, spacious views across the Kalahari. Solar power provides electricity and hot water, and the innovative insulated canvas walls and roof keep the temperatures inside the units comfortably cosy.

Thanks to the diversity of habitats, healthy game populations move through the area and are present to a greater or lesser degree all year long. In the summer months (end-November to April) the advent of the rains brings the desert to riotous life. Short grasses attract plains game such as springbok; gemsbok and wildebeest converge in their hundreds and thousands here to feed, attracting predators such as lion and cheetah. Guided game drives unlock the area’s fascinating wildlife treasures with excellent cheetah viewing a regular feature. San bushmen experiences provide insights into the unique, ancient culture of the first people to inhabit southern Africa.

The concession is located in the northern Kalahari plains of the Central Kalahari Game Reserve (CKGR) where broad-leaved and acacia savannah mosaics dominate the landscape. The CKGR is one of the biggest protected areas in Africa and holds significant populations of large predators such as lion, cheetah and brown hyena. In summer Kalahari Plains Camp is simply unbeatable as a wildlife destination.

Fun place to stay. It was VERY hot, so we made good use of the fan in our room and the lovely pool. We even slept out on the star deck which was magnificent. The common areas were comfortable and everything looked out over the Big Pan. You never knew what wildlife would walk by!
