Northern Tanzania
Mbali Mbali Tarangire River Camp
Mbali Mbali Tarangire River Camp is a luxury tented lodge situated on a high ridge overlooking the Tarangire River where elephants and other game come to drink and bathe. There are twenty traditional safari tents, each tastefully decorated and featuring a pleasant private deck with views over the plains to Mounts Meru and Kilimanjaro in the distance. Each tent has its own spacious private bathroom and a comfortable living area in which to relax. The lodge offers a large dining room, bar and swimming pool – a welcome retreat in the heat of the day. As the lodge’s large concession (25,000 hectares) is outside the national park boundary, the lodge offers walking tours through the surrounding bush as well as in Tarangire National Park.
Tarangire is a delightful and somewhat underrated National Park. Covering 2,600sq km, it has a large density of game and numerous wide-boughed baobab trees creating a distinctive landscape not seen elsewhere in the north of the country. The park is exceptionally good for elephants and herds of 100 or so individuals are not uncommon.
Facilities
Restaurant, bar, lounge, private bathrooms.
Local Wildlife
The park is known for its large numbers of elephant, particularly in the dry season. Buffalo, zebra, wildebeest, greater kudu and eland can also be easily seen here. There is a small population of tree-climbing lion and African wild dog. Leopards are widespread throughout the park. The very rare fringe-eared oryx can be seen on occasion. The normally rarely seen African rock python is often found resting in acacia trees close to wetlands near Silale and other reptiles include puff adders, Speke’s hinged and pancake tortoises. Birdlife is also impressive at 550 species including secretary bird, martial and crested eagles and the endemic yellow-collared lovebird. You can also see Africa’s heaviest flying bird, the Kori bustard, and the world’s largest bird, the stocking-thighed ostrich.
Optional Activities
Game drives in the park and walking safaris in the park and within the concession outside the park. Cultural activities such as visits to the local Maasai and Datoga villages.

We had a superb holiday [in Tanzania]. I was particularly struck by the variety in the bush. I wasn’t expecting such diversity of trees and colours. Fabulous wildlife. The arrangements all went like clockwork making the whole holiday very relaxed. It worked very well with the children…they were welcomed everywhere.
