Western Uganda
The River Station
Situated within the Kyambura Game Reserve which borders Queen Elizabeth National Park in southwestern Uganda, The River Station is a stylish lodge set on the banks of the broad channel that flows between Lake George and Lake Edward. Its elevated position above the water offers a peaceful vantage point over one of the region’s most wildlife‑rich corridors, creating an authentic Ugandan bush atmosphere with hippos, elephants and abundant birdlife often visible from the lodge itself. The boat ride to the lodge affords some great wildlife viewing: we saw lions, elephants, hippos, Cape buffalo and fish eagles.
Designed along the lines of a contemporary tented safari camp, The River Station features a collection of spacious tented suites, each with an en‑suite bathroom and a private deck overlooking the channel. Interiors are simple and elegant, using natural materials that echo the surrounding landscape. Days begin with soft light rising over the water and end with relaxed dinners in the main lodge, where open‑fronted spaces make the most of the views. A swimming pool and comfortable lounge areas provide welcome places to unwind between activities, making the lodge an inviting base from which to explore Kyambura Gorge for chimpanzees, numerous volcanic crater lakes offering excellent birding, and the wider Queen Elizabeth conservation area for classic game drives.

A good pair of binoculars is invaluable here, as much of the wildlife activity along the channel can be enjoyed directly from the lodge’s decks and viewing areas.

Wildlife highlights included seeing a shoebill, we really had to search! Seeing a leopard up close on our night drive, seeing lions out on our own! The abundance and concentration of wildlife in Lake Mburu. And of course the gorillas which was so magical and the chimps.
