Driving east from Cape Town for about 1½ hours, one reaches Hermanus, the once quiet fishing village which is now generally considered to be one of the major whale-watching destinations in the world. The season runs from June to November and, from the cliff tops, sightings of southern right whale are virtually guaranteed during the peak season of September/October with humpback and Bryde’s whales seen offshore from boats.
