Group Tour: India’s Tiger-Rich Conservation Corridors
Tour Introduction
This tour begins in the Indian capital city of Delhi, where you’ll be staying in the upscale, Roseate House, a large hotel situated conveniently close to the airport. You’ll have the rest of the day to spend at your leisure, where you may choose to venture to some of Delhi’s premier sites of interest. It was made India’s new capital city in 1911 by George V, with New Delhi planned and built as an alternative and more modern administrative centre to the centuries-old urban maze of Old Delhi.
After acquainting yourself with the rest of your group over dinner, enjoy a restful night before embarking for Nagpur by plane. Located in the state of Maharashtra, Nagpur is the largest city in the Central Indian region. Over the next eight days you’ll experience two brilliant reserves of this region, all part of the Central Indian Tiger Landscape, a network of tiger reserves and forested ‘corridors’. These wildlife corridors are essential links of suitable habitat between two larger protected areas, a key tool in the fight for tiger conservation in particular.
You will visit the fully protected areas of Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve and Umred-Karhandla Wildlife Sanctuary, but also experience a new wave of conservation initiatives to help form these wildlife corridors, in the community owned and operated Bamboo Forest Nature Conservancy. Bamboo Forest have launched one of their ‘COCOONs’ initiatives. The COCOON model stands for ‘Community Owned Community Operated Nature Conservancy’. Here, they work with local landowners to encourage ecotourism and the rewilding of degraded and unproductive farmland, bordering established protected areas. Their model has been heralded by world-leading conservationists. You’ll have the chance to explore the conservancy, with a guided tour focused on birding and learning about the COCOON Concept.
The tour includes seven private jeep safaris into Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve and three private jeep safaris into Umred-Karhandla Wildlife Sanctuary, including one full day jeep excursion.

Overview
Bamboo Forest Nature Conservancy is a new luxury lodge and small conservancy adjacent to Umred Karhandla Wildlife Sanctuary. It has ten luxury ‘nests’ which are raised up off the forest floor, to allow wildlife to pass through as unobstructed as possible. The conservancy aims to rewild 250 acres, and tigers have even been filmed walking through the property at night. For this reason, a guide escorts you between buildings if you leave your accommodation to walk to another location. Jeeps even collect you from beneath your room, before taking you out on safaris into Umred Karhandla.
The lodge has permission to conduct full day safaris into the sanctuary, one of only three vehicles per day allowed to do so. Between the safari jeeps entering the park during designated morning and evening periods, you would find yourself as practically the only vehicle in the park (bar two others)! A great team of naturalists lead safaris and other excursions, whilst there is a wellness centre with an expert yoga teacher on hand to take classes, during your downtime back at the lodge.
The Bamboo Forest Nature Conservancy is one of a new ‘Community Owned Community Operated Nature Conservancies’ (COCOONs) that are critical rewilding initiatives undertaken outside India’s Protected Area Network. The project is based on an innate belief that communities living closest to the most biodiverse spaces, deserve to be the primary beneficiaries and custodians of this biodiversity.
The aim of this initiative is to both expand the size and improve the quality of habitat available to wildlife, by encouraging local communities to convert their own marginal and failed farms back to its natural wild state. The land-holding will continue to be in the hands of the community but would serve as a biodiverse nature refuge, capable of offering communities assured livelihoods and economic security in an era of climate change. Additionally, COCOON Conservancies serve to act as effective buffers, absorbing wildlife communities that spill over from protected core areas, thus reducing human-animal conflict. By locating such conservancies in corridors, the objectives of widening and refreshing the gene pool is also met.

Everything ran like clockwork. Everyone we dealt with was friendly and very helpful. Transfers, guides and wildlife sightings all exceeded our expectations. Highlights were having a male tiger with his mouth and legs covered in blood following our jeep a long the track in Tadoba and seeing a leopard lounging on a rock by the roadside.
