The Wonderful Wildlife of Argentina and Chile
Tour Introduction
We designed this itinerary to reveal the best wildlife and landscapes of Argentina and Chile while staying in very comfortable hotels and traditional estancias. Start with an informative tour of Buenos Aires, then transfer south to the spectacular Valdes Peninsula where, depending on season, highlights could include close encounters with enormous elephant seals, southern right whales, hunting orcas and vast nesting colonies of penguins. There will also be a full day to explore Los Glaciares National Park and its stunning Perito Moreno glacier. From El Calafate, cross the border into Chile for the iconic Torres del Paine National Park for great wildlife viewing in one of the world’s most beautiful landscapes – you could even see puma. Chile’s beautiful Lake District and mysterious Chiloé Island, and Barriloche back in Argentina, add further wildlife and cultural interest and you end with a tango show back in Buenos Aires. A truly unforgettable tour which combines the two of South America’s most impressive destinations in a logistical and complementary way.

Orcas carry out beach stranding attacks on the Valdes Peninsula in March and April. Southern right whales can be seen from June to November and Magellanic penguins from September to April. In general the best months to visit Patagonia are from October until the end of March when daytime temperatures can reach the low 20s degrees centigrade.
For the best chance in the Americas to see the extra-elusive puma, hire a private guide in Torred del Paine National Park for a day or two.

Our first day of puma tracking was definitely the highlight. The weather was good and we saw distant pumas in the morning and a group of six around a guanaco kill in the afternoon. Spending 2.5 hours watching the interactions between the different individuals was fascinating.
