A fantastic wildlife itinerary taking in Madagascar’s top natural attractions in the north along with the wildlife rich rainforests of Andasibe.

Beginning with the tropical rainforests of Andasibe, there will be encounters with singing indri’s and acrobatic black-and-white ruffed lemurs along with fascinating smaller creatures such as tenrecs, giraffe-necked weevils and colourful treefrogs.

Heading north to the mysterious and isolated rainforest Montagne D Ambre National Park there is a wealth of locally endemic wildlife to enjoy including some of the world’s tiniest reptiles; the unbelievably small Brookesia leaf chameleons.

From here visit the remote Andranomanera Protected Reserve which protects a large area of hilly semi humid and dry deciduous forest home to the incredibly rare Perrier’s sifaka.

Next comes the strangely eroded karst limestone tsingy peaks of Ankarana Special Reserve containing bat caves, sunken dry deciduous forests and abundant lemurs.

After all that adventure enjoy a relaxing staying by the beach on the beautiful island of Nosy Be. From your base on Nosy Be enjoy some thrilling snorkelling excursions with whale sharks and green turtles and with black lemurs and panther chameleons in the Lokobe Reserve.

Day 1 - Antananarivo

Arrive Antananarivo. Met on arrival at the airport and transfer (15 minutes) to your hotel.

Staying at Relais des Plateaux. Includes No Meals.

Day 2 - Andasibe (Perinet Reserve)

Today transfer (4 hours) by road to Andasibe and the Analamazaotra (Perinet) Reserve. After lunch take an excursion in the rainforest followed by an evening night walk once dark. The reserve is the best place to see the largest lemur species, the indri, along with the diademed sifaka, common brown lemur and the eastern (lesser) gray bamboo lemur. At night it is possible to encounter the cute Goodman’s mouse lemur, furry-eared dwarf lemur and eastern woolly lemur.

Day 3 - Mantadia National Park

Early drive (1 ½ hours) to Mantadia National Park to the north. Full day with packed lunch to explore the old growth primary rainforest of this exciting National Park in search of its wildlife.

The beautiful diademed sifaka, indri and very agile black-and-white ruffed lemur are regularly encountered here while other wildlife such as colourful painted mantella frogs and giraffe-necked weevils are common.

Amongst the diverse birdlife are 4 species of skulking ground rollers including the wonderful scaly-ground roller and bright pitta-like ground roller. Take another night walk in the evening in search of more nocturnal wildlife.

Day 4 - Perinet Reserve

This morning visit the main Perinet rainforest reserve or one of its neighbouring community run parks such as VOIMMA. This area is the best place to see the wonderful teddy bear like, indri, along with many other lemurs. The forest is also home to snuffling lowland streaked tenrecs and the huge Parson's chameleon and birdlife includes the Madagascar long-eared owl, collared nightjar, Madagascan wood-rail and pygmy kingfisher.

In the afternoon transfer 4 hours back to Tana and your hotel, close to the airport.

Day 5 - Montagne d’Ambre National Park

Transfer to the airport to take domestic flight north to Antsiranana (Diego Suarez).

Met on arrival in Antsiranana and transfer (45 minutes) to the Montagne d’Ambre National Park. After lunch, take an afternoon walk in the park and an optional nocturnal wildlife walk.

The park is an isolated mount of rainforest in an otherwise semi-arid landscape and supports many exciting species. Walk the trails in search of lemurs including the beautiful crowned lemur, Sanford’s brown lemur as well as many reptiles and birds such as Madagascar crested ibis and the local subspecies of forest rock thrush. This reserve contains at least 11 species of chameleon, including one of the tiniest of them all the; Amber Mountain leaf chameleon (Brookesia tuberculata) and the beautiful panther and elephant-ears chameleons.

Day 6 - Montagne d’Ambre National Park

This morning take another walk inside the Montagne d’Ambre National Park. There are many trails through stunning scenery, some leading to sacred waterfalls. The park is also an excellent spot for the fantastically well camouflaged leaf-tailed geckos.

Later depart for a 4 – 5 hour bumpy drive south to the Andrafiamena Protected Area and your accommodation at the Black Lemur Camp run by the Lemur Conservation charity FANABY deep in the forest.

Day 7 - Andrafiamena Protected Area

Today explore the Andrafiamena Protected Area in search of the Perrier’s sifaka and other lemurs. The all black Perrier’s sifaka is restricted to northern Madagascar where its population and distribution has been greatly decreased and fragmented by habitat loss. The species is listed as one of the world’s top 25 most endangered primates by the IUCN.

The Sifakas are usually found in area of forest around 45 minutes’ walk from the lodge and are quite curious of people. In addition to the Sifakas, this reserve is also an excellent location to see the crowned lemur which are often in the dry forests. There are also Sandford’s brown lemurs and ring-tailed mongooses.

Day 8 - Ankarana Special Reserve

Today drive 3 hours on a bumpy road to Ankarana Special Reserve, a spectacular area of limestone pinnacles and sunken tropical dry deciduous forest. Spend the afternoon exploring the Reserve on a variety of trails in search of lemurs, ring-tailed mongoose and other wildlife. Perhaps take an evening night walk in search of the nocturnal northern mouse lemur.

Day 9 - Ankarana Special Reserve

Full day to explore Ankarana Special Reserve. Trails can be chosen depending on your interests/fitness. Perhaps walk to the main viewpoint over the tsingy or hike and climb to Lac Verte (difficult) or visit the Grotte de Chauve Souris bat cave.

Ankarana supports a particularly high densities of crowned and Sandford’s brown lemurs and is also home to the localised Ankarana sportive lemur which can easily be seen in its day roost, tree holes.

Day 10 - Nosy Be

After breakfast drive 4 hour to Ankify past plantations and villages specialising in different local produce. Perhaps stop at a local vanilla plantation if of interest. Transfer to the dock and then (45 mins) by boat to the island of Nosy Be. On arrival transfer (30 minutes) by road to your hotel and enjoy the rest of the day at leisure.

Day 11 - Lokobe Reserve

This morning pick up and transfer to the village of Ambatozavavy. From here you will be transferred into a local pirogue (local dugout canoe) for the boat journey to the village and nature reserve of Lokobe. This reserve is in the southeast corner of Nosy Be and is an excellent lowland rainforest habitat covering 740 ha.

The reserve is most noteworthy for its population of black lemurs, local endemic Nosy Be (Hawk’s) sportive lemur and for its reptile (50 species) and frog (35 species) diversity. These include the beautifully marked and multi-coloured Panther chameleon and some small species of Brookesia chameleons plus impressive boa constrictors and brown mantella frogs.

Day 12 - Nosy Be

Today transfer to Nosy Be dock for a thrilling half day whale shark snorkelling excursion. (Please note that this excursion is dependent on numbers and weather conditions)

The whale shark is the largest fish existing in the ocean today and can grow up to 50 feet (15 metres) in length. The prefer waters of warm surface temperature where they feed on blooms of plankton. These precise conditions are found in the waters of Nosy Be in October and November along with good visibility for snorkelling.

Return to the hotel to enjoy the afternoon at leisure.

Day 13 - Nosy Be

Today enjoy another whale shark snorkelling excursion.

The sharks feed on or just below the surface by filtering small planktonic organisms out of the water through their baleen (a built-in hair-like structure replacing teeth) that make them easy to view. Whale sharks are very docile creatures and hardly notice visitors if not touched or approached too closely.

During a whale shark tour you may also see spinner, pantropical spotted or Indo-Pacific bottle-nosed dolphins, manta or mobula rays and green and hawksbill turtles. Return to the hotel to enjoy the afternoon at leisure.

Day 14 - Nosy Be

Today enjoy a full day at leisure to relax or take optional activities such as a snorkelling trip to the Nosy Tanikely Marine Reserve, Nosy Komba Island or a spice tour of Nosy Be.

Day 15 - Nosy Be

Enjoy the morning at leisure and then transfer to the Nosy Be airport for your international flight. Depart on your flight home.

It was an excellent trip. I saw a lot of a wonderful country and would like to return. The Malagasy people are lovely. Friendly and hospitable throughout. Everything was done to ensure we were happy and comfortable. Excellent service and wildlife. Wildlife highlights: mating fosas, close encounters with indri, diademed sifaka and ringtailed lemurs above us as we picniced below.
